BACKGROUND
The African Network of Scientific and Technological Institutions (ANSTI), has established the Conference of Vice-Chancellors, Deans of Science, Engineering and Technology (COVIDSET) as a forum for University leaders responsible for Science and Engineering Education to meet and dialogue on strategic issues in Science and Engineering Education. COVIDSET is a forum both for the exchange of ideas and experiences as well as for the sensitization of University Leaders on trends in science and engineering education in the region and globally. In 2005, the first COVIDSET meeting was held in Accra, Ghana, under the theme "State of Science and Technology Training Institutions". The participants in the Forum highlighted the problems facing Science and Technology Training Institutions and developed a road-map for revitalization. In 2007, the forum will meet again to consider the theme "Relevance of Science, Engineering and Technology Training to development challenges in Africa". Under this theme, participants will be able to discuss two inter-related actions where university science and engineering education is expected to contribute to the attainment of various targets in the Millennium Development Goals and Education for sustainable development.
OBJECTIVES OF THE CONFERENCE
The main goal of the conference is to provide a forum for the discussion of issues pertaining to relevance of the current science and engineering curricula with particular reference to the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals and sustainable development.
CONFERENCE THEMES
The theme of the conference is "Relevance of Science, Engineering and Technology Training to development challenges in Africa". Under this theme, the conference will discuss sub-themes which address important issues of sustainability and the Millennium Development Goals. The sub-themes of the conference are:
* Science, engineering and technology training for poverty alleviation
* Science, engineering and technology and the African renaissance
* Science, engineering, technology and the Environment
* Science, engineering and technology investment in African countries
* Science, engineering and technology for Health
* Science, engineering and technology for infrastructure development
CALL FOR ABSTRACTS
University leaders with experience and/or knowledge of the problems covered in the themes of the conference are invited to submit 200 - 250 words abstract to the ANSTI Secretariat. Papers should discuss how science and engineering education can produce graduates that can address the problems of diseases, the environment, poverty and infrastructure. Authors with proposals or experience with courses that address these issues are particularly welcome to submit abstracts.The abstract should include the title, author's name, affiliation, mailing address, e-mail address and fax numbers. For ease and speed of communication all correspondence between authors and the organizers will be by e-mail (conferencepapers at ansti.org). Intending authors should note the following deadlines.

CONFERENCE REGISTRATION FEES
The fee is $50.00 for participants from member institutions of ANSTI. Other participants will pay $200. The fee covers the welcome reception, conference dinner and the proceedings.
PARTICIPANTS
>From experience with the last Forum, we are expecting over 200 participants from among leaders of institutions responsible for teaching and/or research in the region. These will include Vice-Chancellors, Deans of Faculties and Heads of academic departments in African universities. There will also be participants from amongst the donor community and agencies involved in Higher Education and the promotion of Science and Technology in Africa.

APERÇU GENERAL:
Le Réseau Africain d'Institutions Scientifiques et Technologiques (RAIST), a créé la conférence des Recteurs, des Doyens d'univesité de Science, d'Ingénierie et de Technologie (COVIDSET) comme un forum des dirigeants et responsables académiques de l'enseignement des sciences et des techniques pour faire face et dialoguer sur les questions stratégiques de l'enseignement scientifique et technique. COVIDSET est un forum d'échange d'idées et d'expériences ainsi que de sensibilisation des responsables universitaires sur les tendances de l'enseignement scientifique et technologique dans la région et dans le monde.
En 2005, la première réunion de COVIDSET était tenue à Accra, Ghana, sous le thème: "Situation d'institutions de formation scientifique et technologique". Les participants au forum ont souligné les difficultés rencontrées par les institutions de formation scientifique et technologique et ont élaboré une feuille de route pour le démarrage.
En 2007, le forum se réunira encore pour considérer le thème "Rapport entre la Formation Scientifique, d'Ingénieur et Technologique aux Défis du Développement en Afrique". Sous ce thème, les participants seront en mesure de discuter deux actions inter-connectées là où l'enseignement scientifique et technique universitaire est attendu de contribuer à l'aboutissement de différents buts dans les objectifs de développement millénaire et l'éducation du développement durable.
LES OBJECTIFS DE LA CONFERENCE
Le but principal de la conférence est de fournir un forum pour discuter des questions pertinentes au rapport entre les programmes scientifiques et d'ingénierie actuels avec une référence particulière à l'aboutissement des objectifs de développement millénaire et du développement durable.
LES THEMES DE LA CONFERENCE
Le thème de la conférence est: "Rapport entre la Formation Scientifique, d'Ingénieur et Technologique aux Défis du Développement en Afrique". Sous ce thème, la conférence discutera les sous-thèmes qui portent sur les questions importantes de durabilité et les objectifs de développement millénaire.
Ci-après les sous-thèmes de la conférence:
* La formation scientifique, d'ingénieur et technologique pour la réduction de la pauvreté.
* La science, l'ingénierie, la technologie et la renaissance africaine.
* La science, l'ingénierie, la technologie et l'environnement.
* L'investissement scientifique, d'ingénieur et technologique dans les pays africains.
* La science, l'ingénierie et la technologie pour la santé.
* La science, l'ingénierie et la technologie du développement des infrastructures.
DEMANDE DE RESUME DE DOCUMENTS
Les dirigeants académiques ayant des expériences et/ou de connaissance des questions traitées sous les thèmes de la conférence sont invités à soumetre un résumé de 200 à 250 mots au Secrétariat du RAIST. Les documents doivent porter sur la manière dont l'enseignement de la science et de l'ingénierie peut produire des diplômés qui peuvent traiter les problèmes de maladies, l'environnement, la pauvreté et l'infrastructure. Les auteurs munis de propositions ou d'expériences pertinentes aux thèmes qui traitent ces questions sont particulièrement invités à soumettre des résumés.
Le résumé doit comprendre le titre, le nom de l'auteur, l'affiliation, les adresses postale et électronique, et le numéro de fax. Pour faciliter la rapidité des communications, toutes correpondances entre les auteurs et les orgnisateurs doivent être envoyées par voie électronique à: conferencepapers at ansti.org

FRAIS D'INSCRIPTION A LA CONFERENCE
Les frais d'inscription à la conférence sont de 50 dollars E.U. pour les participants d'institutions membres du RAIST. D'autres participants verseront 200 Dollars E.U. Les frais couvrent la réception d'accueil, le dîner et la procédure de la conférence.
LES PARTICIPANTS
Selon l'expérience du forum précédent, nous attendons plus de 200 participants parmi les dirigeants d'institutions chargées de l'enseignement et/ou de la recherche dans la région. Ceux-ci comprendront les recteurs, les doyens de facultés et les chefs de départements académiques des universités africaines. Il y aura également des représentants de la communauté des donateurs et des agences internationales impliquées dans l'enseignement supérieur et la promotion de la science et la technologie en Afrique.
